WOULD MAKE A TERRIFIC MOVIE January 7, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A whirlwind of a book! Both my son & daughter thoroughly enjoyed this exciting book based on a shipwreck where the passengers were saved by a heroic Newfoundland dog. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what happens. My children liked the actual pictures of the ship, lighthouse and mailbag that the baby was saved in. We all fell in love with Skipper, the Newfoundland dog. A fantastic read for the entire family.
Wreck of The Ethie Review December 20, 2002 Michael Amoury (Springfield, VA) This is a very good story about a girl named Colleen and her dog Skipper, formally known as Wisher, who risked it all to save everyone on a ship called the S.S. Ethie. In 1919, the S.S. Ethie was caught in the middle of a blizzard AND a hurricane. The barometer dropped one inch a minute. They were headed to ST.Johns Bay, off the coast of Newfoundland. The wind was so strong they were blown away! They were now headed for the rocky bottom of the bay! But...you'll need to read the book to find out what's going to happen next!
Full of excitement and old world intrigue September 25, 2002 Robin Payne (McLean, VA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Once I started reading The Wreck of the Ethie to my daughter we couldn't put it down. The relationship the girl has with her dog, her family and the beach is so well portrayed. My daughter really identified with the girl in the story. Not only is the book a good read, it sends such a meaningful message. Full of history, geography and mother nature. We also are now convinced that our 102 pound black Lab - Belle - definately has more Newfy in her than Lab.
Great Read for Children and Adults Alike! June 7, 2002 J. Saraceno (Lovettsville, Va) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Hilary Hyland has done a commendable job writing this historical fiction book that children and adults will LOVE! It is a fictionalized account of the Ethie, a coastal steamer holding 92 passengers and crew that was caught in a terrifying storm off the coast of Newfoundland. The dramatic account is told from the viewpoint of a young girl on shore and the ship's boy. The heart of the book is a Newfoundland dog, who plays a crucial role in the rescue of the people aboard the doomed ship. You will be on the edge of your seat throughout this exciting book. An Author's Note and glossary of nautical terms at he end of the book are great additions for children!Mrs. Hyland also visits schools to talk about her book and the research involved. She comes accompanied by her own Newfoundland Dog, Cubbie. Hyland and Cubbie were a huge hit with the students and staff!
Great story and even better it really happened! April 19, 2002 pat sakovich (Sterling,Virginia) I enjoyed this book, an excellent choice for historical fiction. Mrs. Hyland writes about a true incident that occurred in 1919.A ship runs aground in a terrible storm , and it looks like the passengers will not make it to safety. The heart of the book is the story of the Newfoundland dog Skipper, whose valiant efforts to help the Ethie make this great reading. I can't wait to read Mrs. Hyland's next book. ...
