5 out of 5 stars The story of the love between a young girl and her dog.   August 1, 2000

In Newfoundland in 1912, twelve-year-old Maggie Wells loves her dog, Sirius, as do the rest of the Wells family. But spiteful Tamar Rand, daughter of the wealthiest and most powerful man in the tiny town of Bonnie Bay, hates both Maggie and Sirius. So Tamar tells her father that Sirius was responsible for the death of one of the Rands' sheep. Mr. Rand decides Sirius must be shot, and uses his influence to convince the authorities that Sirius is a menace. So Maggie decides to hide her dog, unable to bear him either being killed or sent away. When a ship begins to sink off the island, however, Sirius is the only one who can bring a line through the water to the ship. Maggie knows it's the right thing to do, but will revealing her dog risk his life? I highly reccomend this novel, both to fans of historical fiction. It brings the place and time to life.

I can't help but comment to "Bored in Biloxi" that you are almost guaranteed to turn your child off reading for life if you force her to read a story she's not engaged with just because you "spent good money" on the book. It's a matter of taste as much as anything - if she doesn't like a particular book, let her find one she will enjoy!

My daughter read this in anticipation of a heartwarming story. That is not at all what I got. I was too wordy and drawn out. It did not hold the attention of my child and I had to stay on her constantly just to get her to finish it. (Since I paid good money for it, I made her read it through completely.)

5 out of 5 stars More than a story about a dog   March 23, 2000

Set in 1912, "Star in the Storm" is not only a heart-warming story of Sirius, a gentle giant Newfoundland dog, but also the coming of age of his mistress, twelve year old Maggie Wells of Bonnie Bay. Maggie faces harsh reality when her non-sheepherding dog is outlawed by village law. Childlike, she hides him. Later, she must decide whether to bring Sirius out of hiding and send him into a stormy sea with lines to help rescue people on a sinking ship. While sharing Maggie's adventures with her beloved dog, we learn about family life in Newfoundland.

This charming book took me to a part of the world that I am quite unfamiliar with and made it come alive. Sirius, the dog, is endearing, as are many of the characters. It is an exciting and captivating story that I think both young and old would enjoy.
