2 out of 5 stars $23+ for a black and white book?   January 19, 2004

I have always employed the reviews offered by Amazon.com when considering a book I am not familiar with. I must confess that this book was very disappointing compared with other dog books I have purchased in spite of the glowing reviews for it's data content. The purchaser has a right to expect book quality commensurate with the overall price. $23+ for black and white? I know that Ansel Adams has made a name for himself via the black and white photo, but this book does not rise to the level of that quality! Since most Newfies are black, the pictures do not stand out against the black and white background. Even the cover is poor quality. It is hard to distinguish the Newfie on the cover against the dark background. I ask you. . . how many books are published today completely black and white? I cannot remember the last one I came across! The publisher may have the right to cut corners in costs of publication, but it would seem fair to warn the reader of the fact. Especially if the price of the book is so high! As a lover of Newfies, they deserve better!

5 out of 5 stars My New Textbook   August 27, 2002

I've researched 2 different breeds and have bought 8 books on the two breeds that I was considering. This book will now be my constant reference guide when our puppy arrives next year. The exhaustive descriptions, the detailed diagrams of skeletal structure and overall form will help me for many years to come. The training section was also very informative. My only complaint is that there are no colour pictures of these beautiful dogs !

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the true Newfoundland Lover   April 6, 2002

This is one of the best books ever published about the Newfoundland breed. The drawings of structure and movement alone are worth the price! Great for the long-time Newf lover as well as a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive and enjoyable book ever about Newfs   December 8, 2000

Amazing book! As a new owner of a Newfoundland, this is my bible! It is apparent the author truly adores her dogs! Big book and covers all topics that owners may be interested in!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Magnificent! The best of all Newfoundland books!   October 8, 1999

At last! A book that describes, quantifies and illustrates what makes the most beautiful of dog breeds beautiful. The "COMMENT REGARDING THE STANDARDS" and "MOVEMENT" chapters should become the standards themselves."One remains enraptured before a beautiful dog as one does before a beautiful painting, and one never tires of looking at him. Thus, to study the anatomical substrata of the powerful neck or the noble expression almost appears to be mixing the sacred and the profane.", Mrs. Bruno states. But she manages it, and in what way! A true expert.
