Disappointed July 25, 2003 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought this book looking for more breed-specific information on the Newfoundland than I could find surfing the web. However, what I got was a poorly written, inconsistent "manual" by a person who doesn't even own a Newfoundland! This book covers a very impressive breadth of information but the depth is just not there. For example, there are some nice pictures of working and rescue Newfs but the accompanying text lacks substance. Also, there are spots where the author actually contradicts herself. In the feeding chapter, for example, in a photo caption it says "A puppy needs three meals a day between the ages of three and eighteen months", but in an inset detailing how much to feed your dog at what age, it indicates that your puppy should eat 2 meals per day starting at age 3 months!Overall I was disappointed. I did not find any information in this book that I couldn't find on the Internet in about 10 minutes. Also, I have a hard time believing anything I read because of the contradictions and the author's lack of direct experience with the breed.
Terrific Book October 30, 2002 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
We purchased this book, among others, to research Newfs in deciding whether they're the right breed for us. Both my wife and I continue to enjoy this book which offers more information than we presently need (e.g., information on birthing Newfs which we don't intend to do).I don't consider myself to be a dog or Newf expert but I did previously own a Samoyed and don't believe one can substitute, in this book, "dog" for "Newf" as previously suggested by the reviewer from Chicago. For one thing, jogging is NOT good exercise for some dogs. It's interesting to me that the reader from Chicago was not able to extract more useful information from this book. I found this book to be very Newf-specific and offer significant value to the reader. The pictures are great - the kids loved them too. The book is concise, reads easy and is well written. To the author: thank you for sharing your wealth of information.
Informative April 4, 2002 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
I thought the book was informative. It covered a lot of the basics for me in researching the Newf.
Don't bother with this one July 19, 1999 79 out of 89 found this review helpful
This book, while equipt with nice photos is not worth buying. The book is poorly written and contains little information that is particular to the breed (other than a repeated insistance that the dog owner must remember that the 15 pound puppy will soon turn into a 130 lb dog). It is a book about dogs (only "newfie is substituted for dog). For instance -- in the excercize chapter: it says something like "Jogging is good exercize for you and your newfie"... Duh.
