susan's book review November 27, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
-Thunder from the Sea- I read a nutmeg book title Thunder from the Sea by Joan Hiatt Harlow. It is a caring book set in the Moon on Land. The main characters in this story were Thunder, Tom, Enoch, and Fiona. Thunder dog that saved the family from the big waves, earthquake, and the blizzard. Then Tom was the young boy help0er who worked for Enoch and Fiona. He also helped Thunder save the family. Enoch was the owner who hired Tom. He was trying to stop Amos from finding the owner of Thunder because Enoch wanted to find the owner of the dog on his own. Fiona was the mother who got helped a lot because she was pregnant. The main problem of the book occurs when Tom and Thunder were taking Fiona to Dr. Sullivan because she was pregnant and she was going to have the baby. It was not time to have the baby because the baby was too little to come to the world. My favorite part of the book was when Fiona had the baby and named it April because she had the baby on April 1st because it toke the most action there to get Fiona to DR. Sullivan to have the baby. I really enjoyed the book because it tells you that not every body gets what they want. Sometimes they have to believe in what they, want to get what they want. For instance in the story Tom wanted a dog but he did not get one then he started believing that he would get a dog then he got one, He believed that he would get a family and he got a family after getting a dog. I would recommend it to you because this book shows that u can be your self and still be hero. I like this book because you can connect your feeling with the characters are feeling. You can feel the emotion from the acting words. You can feel the love from the dog and Tom for each other. This book is a must-read for all ages. I would give this book 5 stars.
Samantha's Book Review November 22, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Joan Hiatt Harlow calls her wonderful novel Thunder from the Sea. It takes place in a small town on an island, a little off the mainland of Newfoundland in 1929. This realistic fiction story is about animals and strong relationships between an orphan and new family. Tom Campbell, 13 years of age, has finally found a place to call home. An orphan since age three, he is thrilled to live with the little family in Back o' the Moon, the island they live on. His new father is a fisherman, named Enoch, with a kind wife called Fiona, who works around the house. He soon realizes how much he loves them- quite unlike his loathing for his neighbors. The Bosworth's family has a surly looking man named Amos as the father, and his mischievous son, Bert. Bert and Tom started out with a poor liking of each other. Then there is the miracle dog, Thunder, who was rescued from a most terrible and tragic death by Tom. Always wanting a dog of his own, Tom was only too glad to take Thunder in as his own dog. But Amos and Bert wanted the dog, too, so just out of spite, they did whatever they could to find his real owner and get rid of him. Even Enoch put up flyers with the Newfoundland's picture on it, but tore them down again when Thunder saved the life of little Rowena Rideout. Thunder saves many other lives, including Amos and Bert, who now felt terrible about trying to find Thunder. Enoch and Fiona forgive him, but Tom is still not quite sure... Just when all the excitement wears down and Enoch sets off on a hunting trip, more trouble comes along. Fiona discovers that she was to have a baby soon, and it is up to Tom and Thunder to bring her across the breaking ice to the Doctor's house. When visiting the town on the mainland called Chance-A-Long to get to the Doctor, Tom finds even more revolting news- The now softened and sorry Amos and Bert had found the dog's owner- Thunder's real owner was coming to take the dog away! In this story, I really liked Fiona's character. She is responsible and hard working, and fairly jolly and merrily kind to everyone. She tends not to yell or get mad, and praises people much more often then letting them down. Even when she is in pain because of her baby, she tries to do the most work she can possible do to the best of her ability. Comforting and easygoing, Fiona has many positive character traits. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It seemed very effective on me, with the threat of Thunder leaving and all, because I had my own dog die when I was young and had wanted one ever since. I now have a new poodle, and I would be terrified if he had to leave. Wonderful for animal lovers, this realistic story makes you sad and happy at the same time, and it is hard not to fall in love with this dog. If you like good literature and superior dogs (or even if you don't), I highly recommend this book. I give it four stars, because it drew me in well, but I didn't exactly feel strongly for the characters, good or bad. Don't forget... Will Mr. Fowler, Thunder's owner, take him away?

Thunder from the sea Author: Joan Hiatt Harlow, McElderry, Books. Thunder from the Sea is about this kid named Tom Campbell who was in a Home, sort of like an orphanage. Then he was put with a family named the Murray's, but was not adopted. Mrs. Murray was Fiona and Mr. Murray was Enoch. They lived in Newfoundland, and they were independent and did their own fishing business. In Newfoundland they lived in this little place called Back o' the Moon Island, with only having few families living in Back o' Moon Island the closest town was Chance-Along. A good friend of the Murray's was the Bosworth, the neighbors. The Bosworth's have a dad, one mom and three children. They can be hard to work with but they can sometimes try to set thing the correct way they should be. Before Tom came, the Bosworth's and the Murray's worked together to get things done. When Tom was trying to help, the Bosworth's provoked trouble to have an end result a disaster, the Bosworth's very much disliked the Murray's and without each other life was more difficult than it should be. The Bosworths got very mad and tried to find the real owner of `Thunder'. Then Fiona becomes pregnant and the real owner of Thunder is coming, can they pull through? With other smaller problems all through out the book, like when Rowena disappeared and Thunder saved he day once again! He warned them about an earthquake and tidal wave that wiped out the Bosworth's house and more to be said. My favorite part of the book was when: one day when they were fishing, a huge storm came that's when Tom spotted a black dog on a plank of wood swimming. After a few moments of disapproval of getting the dog they finally agreed to, and then rescued to what seemed to be a regular dog. The dog had a white streak going down his chest that look like a blot of lighting so they named him Thunder, because he was found in a thunder storm and that's my favorite part. If I were to rate this thumbs up and a scale 1-10, 10 being the best, 1 being the worst I'd give it 2 thumbs up, 9, and a rating of 4 stars.
A kid's review November 21, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thunder from the Sea Written by Joan Hiatt Harlow The book Thunder from the Sea (written by Joan Hiatt Harlow) takes place on the island of Back o' the Moon in the year of 1929. The main character is Tom, an orphan from the mission who has always dreamed of having a real family and a dog. There are also Enoch and Fiona, a couple who make a living by going fishing and selling them in Chance-along, a town on the shore of the mainland. Then there are Bert and his Father, Amos, who always are causing some sort of trouble. Bert's sister, Nancy, has always wanted to learn to read and write and will do anything to get the chance. Rowena is an innocent little girl who is baby-sat by Nancy. There is also Eddie, who had always done what Bert did, even though he knew it was wrong. Last, but definitely not least is Thunder, a dog found in a thunderstorm, who follows Tom "like a shadow". When Tom is taken to live with Enoch and Fiona for a while, his dream has almost come true. He has a family now- but he still has a nagging feeling that they will send him back to the mission. All he needs to make his dream a reality is to have a dog. His dream could not have gotten any more realistic after he found a Labrador in a thunderstorm. But the dog still belongs to someone else, and any day they could come along and take the dog back. Then there is something that threatens to send Tom back to the mission- Fiona is having a baby. My favorite part of this book was when Bert and Amos finally repented for all of the mean pranks that they had played and tried to help Tom keep Thunder... But even their attempts might not keep this dog from returning to its owner. I think that it was good for them to feel sorry for every thing they had done, but it could have been more helpful if they had not tried to get rid of Thunder in the first place. I would give this book a rating of about four and a half stars. I would rate it this way because this book is extremely touching, but also very sad in some parts, but I don't know if whoever is reading this prefers action packed books, or laugh out loud funny, or weep a puddle of tears sad, but if you like touching, dense literature Thunder from the Sea is for you.

***** By Amanda 11/9/06 La 2 I read a wonderful book titled Thunder from the Sea by Joan Hiatt Harlow. It is a realistic fiction book set in the Newfoundland in Canada in 1929. The main characters in this story are Tom, Fiona,Enoch and Thunder. Tom was adopted by Fiona and Enoch from an orphanage. They adopted him because they couldn't have any kids of their own. Tom liked living with Enoch and Fiona but was making it worse for them by being rivals with the neighbors. The main problem in this story is when something really bad happens and forces most of the families to move for awhile. But Tom, Fiona and Enoch stay on the island along with another family. My favorite part of the book is when Tom finds something that changes his live. This is my favorite part because it was so nice that what he found was what he had always wanted. I really loved this book because it was a mix of feelings and the author was detailed with her descriptions it made me understand the book more. I would recommend this book to everyone especially if you like said but uplifting stories because it was said in some parts but very happy in others.
