A Heart-Throbber October 11, 2006 The Heart-Throbber With all the heart-throbbing action, I must say, Shadows on the Sea is my favorite book. Joan Hiatt Harlow is a wonderful writer. Her book Star in the Storm was almost as wonderful as this one. Jill Winters, the daughter of the famous pop singer, Drew Winters, lives in New York with her mother while her dad is on tour. Well, as soon as summer comes Jill finds out her uncle is sick so her mom has to travel all the way to Newfoundland and Jill must stay with her grandmother in Maine until her mother comes back. Oh no! Will her mom be all right with the war going on? WAIT? She has to go to Maine for the Whole summer? What a disaster... the small town of Winter Haven, with no friends, just grandma! She begs her dad to take her with him but he says it's too dangerous to be traveling around the world with him. Jill met Quarry MacDonald on her way to the Tearoom Inn to visit Wendy, her friend she met on the train. He is pretty cute, but loves all the gossip. He tells Jill about the Crystals. The group all the rich girls are in and do charity. He also talks about her grandmother's secret meetings with Ida. Jill was curious as to what the meetings were about. On Jill's way home, her bike tire blows out and she recks. She stops at Clayton Bishop's house to get some water for her scratched up knee and she sees his pigeons. Why would some one raise pigeons, she wondered? As Jill arrived home she saw that Wendy and Adrie where there. Jill and Wendy talk and Wendy says she would love to be a Crystal, but Jill doesn't want to at all. The Crystals find out she is Drew Winters daughter and they invite her...and Wendy to join. They go to the meeting and everyone crowds around Jill, while Wendy is just sitting there. As they are leaving, Wendy screams at Jill for hogging all the attention and she storms off. Jill waits on Wendy for days to call her, but she never does. Meanwhile Jill found Sarge, her grandmother's cat, attacking a pigeon. So she saved it, and then she noticed something on its leg. She took it off and there was a message. It said "sonnabend." She had no idea what that meant and she didn't want to tell anyone about it. She assumed the pigeon was a carrier pigeon. Days later she tells Quarry about the message. He automatically wants to contact the police but she makes him promise not to tell anyone. They needed to find out where was it going and what did "sonnabend" meant before they could tell anyone. Jill also wondered if her mom would make it there and back alive and if her uncle will live. I think the attended audience level would be 6th grade - 10th grade. This book talked about the war in Germany with Hitler and the events in it maybe able to happen but most likely not, so its probably just fiction. This will certify that the above work is completely original
Shadows on the Sea isn't your average historical fiction!!!! May 13, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Shadows on the Sea was one of the best books I've ever read!! It doesn't bore you like a blah old historical fiction book! It really gives you a great perspective of what it would be like during the war, and it also has an amazing plot! Other that facts, it also is like a realistic-fiction book! If you have to read a historical-fiction book, and you know you don't enjoy them, pick up this book, because it is exactly like a realistic-fiction book! It's totally amazing!!! I loved the book!!!!
